The Journey Thoughts

April 14, 2016

Are you one of those people who, when you develop a thought in your head,
have it there all day and can't seem to get rid of it? Some things are nice
to keep in your thoughts all day long, while other things fill our heads
with things that ought not to be there. Even though we don't want to think
fleshly thoughts, we seem to welcome them by not doing anything to make them
go away. To make them go away, we simply have to transform our thinking.
Scripture tells us to: "Not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good,
pleasing, and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2 We are to be transformed
by renewing our minds, but how exactly do we accomplish this. Again, we
have to go to Scripture, because it has all the answers. If I don't want to
be seduced by the thinking of the world, and if I don't want to have my mind
flooded with lusts of the flesh, I have to have my mind set on other things.
Colossians 3:2 tells us: "Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on
the earth." So, is it possible to walk through every day with our minds on
what is above? Of course, for the mind set on things above, will bring
every thought captive: "since the weapons of our warfare are not worldly,
but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish
arguments and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the
knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ." 2
Corinthians 10:4-5 It becomes a choice for the believer. God wants us to
put our hope and our trust completely in Him, and He will in return provide
guidance by the Holy Spirit of our thoughts and our speech, and our actions.
It's when we want to believe, yet choose to live for the things of the
world, that our thinking starts to move more toward the world. Throughout
my adult life as a believer, when I was still in the military, I would have
to move every 3-4 years. Upon completion of that move, we had the daunting
task of finding another church. With the busyness of the move, and the
settling in to a new job, there were times, when I was not able to find a
fellowship for several weeks. During that time, I found that it takes about
3-4 weeks of not being in church that starts to work on the mind about not
needing to find a church. It's that quick, and the adversary will try to
convince you and me that we no longer need a fellowship. We are either too
busy, or just feel like we don't have the energy to find another church.
But, that's thinking that starts to become like the world. That's the world
taking control of our thinking instead of the Lord. To always have thoughts
of Christ, is to be immersed in fellowship, immersed in Scripture, and
immersed in prayer. When the Church first started after Pentecost,
Scripture tells us that: "And they devoted themselves to the apostles
teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers."
Acts 2:42 Believers humble themselves before the Lord, and admit that they
need God in their lives; they need the movement of the Spirit within them;
they need the encouragement of other believers. (fellowship) And they need
to have their minds set on things that are pleasing to God, for the sake of
love, not duty. For to love Him, is to want to serve Him, and to be like
Him. So what is the answer? It is found in Philippians 4:8-9 and Scripture
says, "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever
is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable - if
there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise -dwell on these
things. Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and
the God of peace will be with you." In other words, my friends, let's start
each day, beginning now, to think on such things, and make them our life.
