The Journey Thoughts

September 5, 2016

Isn't it interesting that on the 4th of July we celebrate with fireworks,
and on Christmas we celebrate with honoring the birth of our Lord and
Savior, and Memorial day, we remember those fallen. So why do we set aside
and honor a day of labor with doing no labor?  Shouldn't we be working to
bring honor to labor?  So today I will work!  Ok, I'd rather work than do
nothing, but that's beside the point.  One day when Jesus passed a man blind
from birth, His disciples started asking him questions about who sinned.
Jesus answered them that neither the blind man nor his parents sinned, but:
"This came about so that God's works might be displayed in him. We must do
the works of Him who sent Me while it is still day. Night is coming when no
one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
John 9:3-5  He then, of course, healed the blind man. It just so happened
that the day Jesus healed the blind man was a Sabbath, the day set aside
when all were supposed to rest from their labor.  Yet Jesus knew that what
He did was more important than the day.  He would say, as recorded in Mark,
that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."  Well this
isn't the Sabbath, but I'm still curious as to why we celebrate work by
resting.   So what honestly should we be doing? Should we work as long as
there is light, knowing that the number of days we have in this life to work
are numbered?  Well, it tells me that there is no rest from our witness.
There is no rest from doing what God wants us to do, whether we have
proclaimed it a day of doing something we want to do.  What better way to
live a Christian life, than to be totally sold out to Christ; totally
submitted to His will, so that we can be ready when He brings that whisper
in our ear that He wants us to do something for someone else, even if it
interferes with the plans we have made.   Yes, this might be a day when we
rest from working in this world, but do you really think it is a day of rest
to stop doing what God has designed for you this day? I would like to think
that I will do nothing this day, but the days are going by so fast in my
life at this time, there never seems to be enough time to do the things I
need to do.  And this is not a case of bad management of my time, it's just
that time is so fleeting.  So now that I've totally flipped you out about
doing something today, what are you going to do?  Whether you rest with
family, do fun things with friends, keep watch, for you never know when the
Lord will stop you from what you are doing, and give you an assignment.  He
just might use this day to do that, even though we set aside this day of
work, to do no work.  So I will work today, and I will keep my focus on
Christ.  I will pray for those who need strength and courage to walk as He
walked.  I will petition our Lord once more to heal us and strengthen us for
yet one more day to glorify Him, and to bring honor to the name of Jesus, in
whose name we pray, and in whose name we work. I will make sure that my work
will involve Him, so that I will be ready when He calls, for whatever
reason.  You just might find yourself passing by a blind man, so you better
be ready to work, even if it is a day we celebrate no work.
