The Journey Thoughts

September 14, 2016

I just learned a valuable lesson about myself yesterday.  I had to go into
town for a meeting, and about half-way there, I realized that I forgot my
phone.  I always carry my phone, for not only is it for communication, but I
keep notes and all else on it.  I decided that I didn't need it so proceeded
to my appointment.   Instead I made plans for grabbing something from Home
Depot because of some things I needed after my appointment.  As I sat in my
truck thinking about what I was going to get at Home Depot, I realized that
all the information was in my phone, and I couldn't remember all that I was
supposed to get. I thought I would call my wife and ask her to look in my
phone, but wait! I don't have my phone!  It's crazy to become so dependent
on something that didn't even exist when I was a young man.  I was so
dependent on my phone, and at that moment, the Spirit prompted my heart to
ask me if I was that dependent on Jesus.   I wonder if I misplaced my
dependency, and instead of depending on Christ for all my needs, was I now
starting to subtly put all my thoughts and needs in a little contraption
that might actually be putting me in bondage to it?  If it wouldn't have
made me so late, I would have turned around, just to get my phone. Are you
lost without your phone?  Do you depend on it more than you do the people
you love?  Is it your entertainment, your business, your brain?  Would you
ever consider leaving home without it on purpose? Scripture tells us:
"Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by
itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain
in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I
in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me. If anyone
does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They
gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in
Me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for
you. My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove
to be My disciples."  John 15: 4-8  But our phones are not the Holy Spirit.
Sure they may keep us occupied when we are bored, or make us busy looking at
things when we should be communicating with others, but isn't that what the
Holy Spirit does in our lives?  I wonder if I have been drawn away from
abiding in Christ, and am now abiding in technology for all the answers that
I want in life.   I don't think technology is evil, but just like anything
else, it can become something that the adversary uses to draw us away from
depending on the Lord for all our needs.  So am I going to get rid of my
phone?  Not for a moment, but I'm going to start something else today.  I'm
going to use it to remind me daily of my need for Christ.  I am going to
think Christ every time I pull it out, and I am going to try to become more
dependent on Christ and less dependent on technology for my life and that of
my family.  So I challenge you, my friends.  If you spend a lot of time on
your phone, think of why you do.  Does it keep you from communicating with
those you love?  Does it keep you from talking to the stranger the Lord has
brought you face to face with?   Let's make sure that the things we have
been given in this life, are used to bring us closer to the Lord, and not to
distract us from communicating with Him.  Let's make sure that we are
abiding daily in the Lord and that we remain tied to Him first before
anything else.    Pastor Andy

Heavenly Father, I want to be dependent on You and You alone. I desire to
have You as my constant guide and comforter, and not an inanimate object.

and help us to return, once again, to Your help, and Your guidance to walk
us through this journey.  Father, I pray today for those who have been hit
