The Journey Thoughts

September 16, 2016

Friday is a good day for some encouragement to get us through the week-end,
until we meet together in our respective worship services and give praise
and honor to the Lord, and to enjoy the company of the fellowship with our
brothers and sisters in Christ.  So here is a good note to end the week on:
"And we exhort you, brothers: warn those who are irresponsible, comfort the
discouraged, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See to it that no one
repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one
another and for all. Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in
everything, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Don't stifle the
Spirit. Don't despise prophecies, but test all things. Hold on to what is
good. Stay away from every kind of evil."  1 Thessalonians 5:14-22    It
sounds like a day's work doesn't it.  But that is the life of a believer.
As we strive to live the life we have accepted in Christ, we can be a
comfort to others, and we can help the weak, and most of all be patient, for
I find that it's easy to help people, but it's hard to be patient.  But God
has put people and things in my life that teach me patience.  I used to be
such an impatient person, but I have noticed through the years that I am
becoming more patient.  It's interesting that after all these years of
trying to be patient, I am still being taught.  I realize that the training
is not over.  I recently bought a new puppy, and she is teaching me just as
much as hopefully I am teaching her.  I am once again learning how to be
patient in very impatient settings.  Do you want to pursue what is good for
each other and all others?  Notice the exhortation does not say, "Pursue
what is good for you, for with that comes self-centeredness, and that's one
more thing to be patient about.  Seeking to aim for the good of all others
requires quite a change of heart for all of us.  It's so hard to let go of
self, so that we can put our energy on helping others.  But whether in my
line of work in medicine, or ministry, the service is all about serving
others.  But even then, I have found those who, while in the work of
service, still manage to put self first over others.   I find it very hard
to rejoice when I am serving self.  And I like to rejoice, which comes
easily, when others are helped.  You may think you are not in a business of
service, but I would imagine that with your life, or your work, you still
are in some kind of service to others, whether it be a boss or co-workers,
or the customer.  Everyone has the opportunity to serve someone.  In that
you should find reason to rejoice.  Also in this day and age we see evil all
over, and at times it's hard not to think of retaliation.  If they practice
evil, evil should be returned to them.  But if we have an attitude of
Christ, we can know that those who practice evil, do not know what they are
doing.  They are lost, just as we were at one time, and I still remember the
mercy shown me, when I did nothing to deserve mercy.  On the contrary, I
deserved retaliation, but received mercy.  So the Word of God proves right
every time.  If we are able to surrender ourselves fully every day and every
moment of every day, the joy that comes from living a life of Christ, even
in the midst of suffering is one in which we would never trade.  The
suffering, the trials, the persecution, the rejection, everything that is
thrown our way, is worth the ride of following Jesus.  So be encouraged
friend.  You are not alone, and if you think that you have too much
suffering, remember that He will never give you more than you can handle,
and when it seems like He does, it is because you are ready once again, to
learn another lesson in life from the Master.  So rejoice!
