The Journey Thoughts

September 26, 2016

You ever notice when a person is performing on a stage before an audience,
the spotlight is projected on them.  Everywhere else in the theater, there
is darkness, except for one person or persons that are performing.  They are
the center of attention, the spotlight is on them.  Now many like to have
the spotlight on them, at parties, and gatherings, yet contrast that to the
believer.  As believers, we are to be the spotlight going outward, instead
of the spotlight coming inward to us, it is to radiate outward to others.
The bible describes it this way: "For you are all sons of light and sons of
the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. So then, we must not
sleep, like the rest, but we must stay awake and be serious."  1
Thessalonians 5: 5-6   And Ephesians 5 says, "For you were once darkness,
but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light - for the fruit
of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth - discerning
what is pleasing to the Lord." 5: 8-10  Matthew 5 tells us that we are the
light of the world, and we are to let our light shine before men, so that
they may see your good works, and give glory to your Father in heaven."  You
see, that's the difference between being of the world, and being in the
world.  Those of the world like to have the spotlight shine on them.  They
want the light to light up their acts.  But for the believer, we are to be
lights that shine outward. Our acts are not a performance that puts us in
the spotlight, but they are the very essence of who we are in Christ.  Our
light is not from us, but from God, and His light is what is shining in us
and through us outward. The light reflects Christ, and not us.  When
Scripture tells us that we are to walk as children of light, that means that
we are to walk, reflecting Christ to others around us.  If others try to
give us glory for being who we are, we are to redirect that praise to the
proper One who deserves the praise - Jesus.   But we still live in this
body, that likes to be recognized. We still live in a way that wants to
promote self over Him.  I fight that as a preacher all the time.  I don't
want praise for a good sermon, but want to give all the glory and honor to
the Lord, yet the body wants praise also. But if it is Christ, who puts this
word on my heart, am I not only a conduit for His word, and not my own?
Many preachers fall into the trap of being put on a pedestal, yet if
anything, Christ needs to be the One we are reflecting, and not ourselves.
He is the One who saves! He is the One who heals! He is the One who
comforts!  He is the One, who through His Spirit, guides us and teaches us
all things that He Himself tells the Spirit to teach us.  So that our life
becomes but an example of His grace, not our own; His light, and not our
own.  I know that within me, when left to my own defenses and abilities, I
want the spotlight, I want the stage, and the center of attention drawn to
me. But that is self-centered.  We, as flesh want the same thing.  We can,
in our humility say we don't, but it is the nature of the flesh, so we might
as well admit it.  For when we understand how the flesh operates, we can
understand that it is through Christ, that we can do all things.  It is
through His grace, that we can be graceful to others. It is through His
love, that we can be loving to others; it is through His compassion, that we
can be compassionate.  So be the spotlight of Christ, and let your light
shine, and don't forget to tell others, who that light is from, for it comes
from the very heart of God to us, and is so powerful that it shines through
us, to a world still living in darkness.

Pastor Andy

Heavenly Father, Lord, Please help me to stay humble before You.  Lord, I
want to shine Your light, Your grace.  I pray for those who are in positions
to either try to be their own light, or reflect Yours.  Some don't even
realize that You put them in that light. I pray for hearts that see You in
all they do.  I pray for those who because of insult or injury, can only be
Your light, for they are at a place that can only reflect what is in their
heart. Please be that light for them to shine to a world living in darkness.
I pray for: Mike and his family, for Tony, for Linda, for Don, Lynn, Dwight,
