The Journey Thoughts

October 14, 2016

Of all the Scripture that I read, and I love it all, there is one particular
part that I feel especially close to. That is the meeting between Jesus and
Nicodemus.  This man, this ruler of the Jews, and a Pharisee, would sneak
out at night to have an audience with Jesus.  He knew something was special
about Him, but in his position, he didn't want to publicly speak out in
favor of Jesus, just in case he was wrong.  So he goes to Him at night, and
makes an observation about Him: "We know that You have come from God as a
teacher, for no one could perform these signs You do unless God were with
him."  So it seems, he was not ready to call Him Messiah yet, but he
believed that God was involved in His coming. But then, Jesus states
something that throws Nicodemus for a loss: "Jesus replied, 'I assure you:
Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.' 'But how
can anyone be born when he is old? Nicodemus asked Him. Can he enter his
mother's womb a second time and be born?' Jesus answered, 'I assure you:
Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom
of God. Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the
Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born
again. The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you
don't know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone
born of the Spirit. 'How can these thing be? asked Nicodemus?'" John 3:2-9
You see, when I was young, the only verse I was ever able to memorize in the
times I was taken to church, was John 3:16. But I never knew what it meant.
When I came to believe in Jesus, and I read Chapter 3, I fully understood.
The verses were no longer confusing to me. I understood what it meant to be
"born again!"  I believe Nicodemus also finally understood, for he was one
of the two, Joseph of Arimathea was the other, who came to take care of
Jesus body when He was crucified. But I went back there today, to the place
in Scripture, when Heaven opened up and the Spirit illuminated God's word in
my heart, and I knew what this new life was, that was living in me.  I often
go back there in my mind, when I am standing in the breeze, feeling the wind
in my face, and thinking about the Spirit, still working within me, but
seeming to want more of me.  That is the time I realize yet once more that
Jesus is still calling to encourage, and strengthen me for the calling He
called me to.  I know that within me, I will always have this flesh thing,
that I do not like very much, but even stronger is this Spirit that burns
within me, calling me to keep walking, keep preaching, keep caring, and keep
loving those He brings into my path.  I have this hope, that everyone who
reads this journey, can reflect on the time when he/she started feeling the
breeze on their faces, and immediately thought of the Spirit of God moving
within them, wanting more of them for the sake of Christ.  It's as if
sometimes, I can hear the conversation between Nicodemus and Christ.  How
can I be born again? And I think of Nicodemus now walking together in
eternity, and I wonder if Jesus has a smile on His face, when He thinks
about the time Nicodemus came to Him at night, and found out the mystery of
the Universe.  That God is Alive, and He and all those who love Him are
together, waiting for the time, when all of us will be together, filled with
the very presence of God Himself, and I can't wait to see that day. I pray
that you will feel the movement of the Spirit in your life today, and
remember who it is who walks with you.
