The Journey Thoughts

October 21, 2016

Be careful little mouth what you say! That's a song we taught our children
when they were small, to remind them that they need to watch what it is that
comes out of their mouths.  I have shared before that out of my mouth,
before salvation, came some pretty reprehensible things. Perhaps that's why
the very first thing that the Lord changed in me was my speech.  I didn't
try not to use foul language, but just could not swear any longer.  It's
like something had taken away my ability to say bad words.  Of course, it
was the Lord, but it almost amazed me how this happened without too much
effort on my part.  God knew that I would need help on that matter.  Jesus
was speaking to the Pharisees when He said this: "Either make the tree good
and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is
known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you
are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. A good man
produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil man produces
evil things from his storeroom of evil. I tell you that on the day of
judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. For
by your words you will be acquitted and by your words you will be
condemned." Matthew 12:33-37  The part that strikes me to the very core is
that "on the day of judgment people will have to give account for every
careless word they speak."  It's hard to stand by and listen to fellow
believers who swear, or use course words.  I know that in this day, many
people talk differently than when I was much younger, but it still is hard
to accept.  When I listen to some of the course words that believers are
using, even when it isn't swearing, I wonder if this is alright. But if I
try to use that very same language, wanting to be "hip" for the day, there
is an unsettling in my heart, as if the Spirit is saying, "do you really
want to use those words?"  I think that I have a lot to hang my head in
humility before the judgment seat of Christ, but I pray that using cuss
words is not one of them.  I think it is important to learn a lesson here.
Just because society has accepted a new language, one in which we have more
freedom to use words, that you would have never used in front of your mother
30 years ago, is not acceptable for believers to speak. Remember, we are
supposed to be different than society.  We are supposed to be an example of
Christ likeness to others around us, and how can we be an effective witness
when the very words that come out of our mouths contain repulsive and evil
content.  When I watch the news of politics, it's hard not to get carried up
in desiring to express our opinion about what is happening in our world, but
the way to fight what is happening in the world, is to present a better way,
a better vocabulary, a better attitude, a better composure, and not play the
same game that is being played out on the tube. Do you need prayer for your
speech?  If so, send me a note. I won't embarrass you by making you a
spectacle, but I will pray for you.  I will add you to the prayer list, for
I believe that when we pray, things happen. When we pray for the Lord to
change us, He changes us. It might take a while, but if we want something
bad enough, God will change us.  You might even find yourself waking up in
the morning with the inability to say another bad word, or use any kind of
offensive speech.  Now that's something to pray about, and we will know that
we can stand in front of Jesus on that day, and if we have to hang our head,
it won't be because of our speech.

Pastor Andy

Heavenly Father, please guard our hearts in the matter of speech. Help us to
realize only what is beneficial and helpful to others, should be spoken for
we know that what comes out of the mouth is the overflow of the heart.
Lord, Forgive us!  I pray for those who desire to clean up their speech, as
well as those I list here.  You know their issues, or trials or
circumstances of life that has them troubled or weary. Please touch them
