The Journey Thoughts

November 4, 2016

There is a story in the bible about ten lepers whom Jesus met on His way
between Samaria and Galilee. They cried out for Him to have mercy on them.
Jesus told them to go show themselves to the priests, and while they were on
their way, they were healed of leprosy.  Then the Bible says, "But one of
them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory
to God. He fell facedown at His feet, thanking Him.  And he was a Samaritan.
Then Jesus said, 'Were not 10 cleansed? Where are the nine? Didn't any
return to give glory to God except this foreigner?' And He told him, 'Get up
and go on your way. Your faith has made you well.'" Luke 17:15-19  But what
happened to the other nine?  Jesus told the one that his faith made him
well, but what about the lack of faith of the nine?  Did the leprosy return?
I think I have a pretty good idea, and it involves more Scripture found in
Matthew 12. Listen to this story that Jesus tells the Pharisees and Scribes:
"When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it roams through waterless
places looking for rest but doesn't find any. Then it says, 'I'll go back to
my house that I came from. And returning, it finds the house vacant, swept,
and put in order. Then off it goes and brings with it seven other spirits
more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result,
that man's last condition is worse than the first. That's how it will also
be with this evil generation." 12:43-45  Even some unbelievers have the
opportunity to be healed of some things, but when they do, who do they give
glory to for their healing?  Is it circumstance, or their own ability, or
the ability of a doctor? Remember Jesus healed a lot of people that were not
believers in Him. They just wanted to be healed so that they could do their
thing. The ten who were healed knew who it was who healed them, but their
excitement of being healed, overshadowed the fact that it was Jesus who
healed them.  Perhaps they didn't even go to the priest, but instead, went
home to show off their clean bodies.  I wonder if the leprosy returned?  I
suspect so, but even if it didn't, without filling themselves with gratitude
to God, and honoring Him by their new lives, the left the house swept, and
put in order, and Jesus says, the last condition will be worse than the
first.  You see believer, we are what we are full of.  A person who reveals
an attitude of pride, puffing himself up, is called a "blowhard" because he
is full of hot air. A person filled with the Spirit is called
"Spirit-filled."  A person who gives, thinking of others, is called
charitable, and has a giving heart.   Everyone becomes full of that which
they live by.  The lesson for today is that we are to be filled with the
Spirit, so that our lives do not have room for evil, even though it seems to
always be lurking around the corner.  It cannot function in a body filled
with the Spirit.  So, Christian, what are you filled with?  Is your life
filled with anger, or jealousy, or worry? Or is it filled with the light of
Christ, that makes you want to bring light to all who live in darkness.  Do
you join in the darkness of friends you associate with, so much so, that
your life is becoming filled with something else, because you no longer have
room for the Spirit to live?  We have a wonderful opportunity to pray for
the Lord to keep our "house" clean.  He will clean the heart and soul, and
fill it with His Spirit, and He will live with us.   It is only us that
wants Him relegated to a small portion of our hearts that we can use on
Sunday, or in the presence of other believers, but ask Him not to show when
we are in the company of unbelievers.  Let's make sure that faith is the
fuel by which we live, and the direction of the Spirit is what keeps us
dependent on Him, always coming back to give thanks to God for our healing.

Heavenly Father, Lord, I surrender again today, all my heart to You, and ask
You to fill me with Your Spirit, so that there is no room for evil to exist.
I pray that for each who read this journey today.  I pray for those who
