The Journey Thoughts

November 14, 2016

Last Friday there were celebrations to honor the veterans of our nation, and
I attended one from my grandchildren's school. What a beautiful celebration,
and I have to tell you what I was most impressed about.  The school was
teaching the children how to honor God, and honor the men and women who
fought so hard for the freedom for us to honor God.  The children were so
expressive in their thanks that I, for one, was moved to tears.  The sight
of seeing our children being taught about the faith, and how that faith fits
in to life here on this planet was breath-taking.  It has renewed my heart
that our future generations are being taught about honor and service to God
and country.   It reminded me of a lesson in Deuteronomy about what the Lord
tells His people about teaching and remembering.  "Imprint these words of
mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let
them be a symbol on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking
about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when
you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorposts of your house
and on your gates, so that as long as the heavens are above the earth, your
days and those of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to
give your fathers. For if you carefully observe every one of these commands
I am giving you to follow - to love the Lord your God, walk in all His ways,
and remain faithful to Him - the Lord will drive out all these nations
before you, and you will drive out nations greater and stronger than you
are." Deut. 11:18-23  I am learning another lesson from my journey with my
new puppy.  At my age, I seem to expect that dog to follow the things I say,
and the result is frustration. When I attended my next dog training session
(for I am the one being trained), I found out that the dog senses my
impatience, and I am taught and encouraged to stay the course, and patiently
teach this puppy daily.  I wonder why that is so hard to do?  But being a
faithful student, I do what I am told, and my puppy responds very well.  I
have learned a couple of things.  She responds to me because I am patient.
She responds to continued training, and not just a one time, "I told you
so," type of learning.  We would never think of training our children that
way, and they take years to train.  So reading Scripture this morning, tells
me to imprint these words, on my heart and on my mind. We are to make our
lives a living history book of study for our children, grandchildren, and
yes, pets.  We are to live a life of faith, not asking others to do what we
cannot do, but being active in our life of faith to those around us. Our
very breath, from the time we arise to the time we go to bed, should be an
example of Christ to those around us.  Not just on Sunday, but every day of
the week.  When I think about it, we are all teachers in this life, passing
down from generation to generation, an attitude of gratefulness to our
Heavenly Father, not just because we feel we have to teach, but because our
lives become a living letter. I imagine that is what Christ was getting to
when He instructed his followers: "But whoever causes the downfall of one of
these little ones who believe in Me - it would be better for him if a heavy
millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the
sea." Matt. 18:6  We have a heavy responsibility to be living examples for
each generation that comes after us. And that living example is not of the
world, but of the faith that comes from believing in the One who saves us,
and who leads us on the journey homeward.  There is no greater calling, so
think about the example you are being to your children and grandchildren.
Are they learning from you and if so, what are they learning?

Pastor Andy

Heavenly Father, thank You for so great a calling, that of parent and
grandparent.  Thank You that we have been given such a wonderful opportunity
to impress upon this next generation the life of faith and the patience to
walk each day as a new day in You.  I pray for those who have crises in
their lives, that their steadfastness and strength be in You, and that is
evident by all those around them.  Make us examples of You!  I pray then
for: Eric, Gene, Terry, Angie, Isabel, Ellen, Virginia, William, a young boy
who lost his foot in an accident. Please be with him and his parents through
this healing.  I pray for Gayla, as she attends her dying father.  I pray
