The Journey Thoughts

November 17, 2016

I have always felt that I want to be in the Lord's will, and that His
direction is more important to me than my direction. But I am a planner!  I
love it when a plan comes together, and I feel like I have accomplished
something when the plan that has been made comes to fruition.  Scripture
tells us: " Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will travel to such
and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.'
You don't even know what tomorrow will bring - what your life will be!  For
you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes. Instead,
you should say, 'If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.' But
as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So it is a
sin for the person who knows to do what is good and doesn't do it." James
4:13-17  Does this mean that I shouldn't plan?  I don't believe it does, for
we can make plans, and some of us, have to have these plans for our lives.
When Paul and Barnabas set out on a missionary journey, they planned their
trip, but knew the movement was in keeping with the will of God passed on to
them by the Holy Spirit.  Being a planner doesn't mean we can't follow the
will of the Lord, for His will would be the reason for the plan.  I know at
any time, God can change my plans, and I am alright with that.  I know that
His will is so much better than my plans,  but I still, hopefully, under the
prompting of the Holy Spirit, will do what His good will is prompting me to
do. I have been given many opportunities in my life, to either climb the
ladder of success, or to be an obedient believer.  Sometimes, the Lord will
grant us the desires of our heart, for He has planted His will into our
hearts, and even though we may think that we are doing something through our
own directions, it is really He who is doing the directing.   He has taken
me to the mountaintop and has asked me to climb back down again.  It's not
that the mountaintop is a great  place to be, for the lush growth of
beautiful plants exist in the valleys, not on the mountain tops.  He wants
us to be happy in His will, for happiness that we find in our own plans,
don't really cause true happiness, if our plans are not in the will of God.
How have your plans been going lately?  Have you made your plans, or are you
following His will, even though you are not sure where it is leading?
That's trusting by faith, that God's direction for you is good, even though
it may lead you through treacherous valleys.  The Lord said through the
Spirit, to Ananias in Damascus, to receive Saul, who would become Paul: "But
the Lord said to him, 'Go! For this man is My chosen instrument to take My
name to the Gentiles, kings, and the Israelites. I will show him how much he
must suffer for My name." Acts 9:15-16  Paul may not have wanted to plan for
his own suffering, but he was given a direction, and that was his goal, his
plan.   And for Him, that plan included suffering.  I wonder, if the Lord
asked us to go to a place where there would be much suffering for us, would
we go?  If we are only listening for the voice that tells us what we want to
hear, will it be the Lord's voice or that of the adversary, tickling our
ears with things that make sense to the flesh, but are not God-directed.
Let's make plans, but let's make sure that what we are truly asking for is
the will of the Lord for our lives, and that of our families.  Then, even if
we walk through minefields, it will be His will, and He will show us where
to plant our feet. Ephesians tells us: "Stand, therefore, with truth like a
belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your
feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace."  6:14-15
