The Journey Thoughts

November 22, 2016

Today I am thankful for the honor of fighting the good fight.  I have been
blessed with being a warrior (combat Corpsman), of serving others with
medical treatment, while serving my country. I am thankful for the strength
to be able to do that, even with almost losing my left arm in a farm
accident when I was ten.  I would go on to serve in the military for 26
years, and I know what it means to put service above self, and commitment to
others even above family.   Fortunately, I did not have to be away from my
family for very long, but the honor of serving never left me. I consider it
an honor serving in the battle between good and evil as a pastor, trying to
equip others to dedicate their lives to our risen Savior. Paul would write
to a young man, who also felt the call to serve Christ, through serving in
the leadership of the local church. His name is Timothy.  Paul would write:
"But you, man of God, run from these things, and pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight for
the faith; take hold of eternal life that you were called to and have made a
good confession about in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of
God, who gives life to all, and of Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession
before Pontius Pilate, I charge you to keep the command without fault or
failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. God will bring this
about in His own time." 1 Timothy 6:11-15   For me the call was loud and
clear, and although it took me a few years to get there, I kept going until
I reached the place where He wanted me to be.  I am thankful to God, who
pursues us with a passion because of the love He has for us.  He wants us to
trust Him so much, that we will be willing to go anywhere, and do anything
He would direct our paths to go.  I love that about our missionaries, for
they too, have a call on their hearts, to serve God in places that are
inconvenient, and isolated and at times lonely, yet He is there watching
over them and us, keeping us from the influences of the adversary.  He
prepares us for each battle, and He equips us for each battle.  He is the
greatest Commanding Officer I have ever had the pleasure of working under,
and I am thankful. Do you know that you too, are a soldier in the army of
the Lord? Paul would write to this young soldier in his second letter: "No
one serving as a soldier get entangled in the concerns of civilian life; he
seeks to please the recruiter."  2 Tim. 2:4  I don't think any of you
disagree that we are involved in a war, for Scripture describes our battle
as this:  For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness,
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. This is why you must
take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil
day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand." Ephesians 6:12-13
I am thankful to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord, and I pray that you
too, will consider it an honor to be in this military, willing to give your
all for the glory of the Lord, and the fight that so fully rages before us.
I am honored to fight beside others who lift me up, and at times, even help
me stand when I feel too weak to stand.  I am thankful to be surrounded by
other warriors who take the battle seriously, and who dedicate their lives
to fight the good fight. May you be given rest this week from the battle,
and find strength in family and friends as you think of all the things you
are thankful for.  Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance,
and gentleness, and watch how blessed your week will be.

Pastor Andy
