The Journey Thoughts

December 5, 2016

I love to laugh, and enjoy the company of those who also like to laugh.
There is a quote that says, "I have not seen anyone dying of laughter, but I
know millions who are dying because they are not laughing."  I suppose that
is right to a certain extent.  I wish I could laugh more, and love to read
Scripture that reminds us to laugh.  Proverbs 15:15 says, "All the days of
the oppressed are miserable, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast."
But why is it that many Christians feel it is wrong to laugh, or at least to
show the kind of joy that gives us all an opportunity to break out in
laughter.  I know there is a time to weep and a time to Laugh as
Ecclesiastes tells us, and at times we may feel like laughing when those
standing next to us are mourning.  We are to weep when they weep and laugh
when they laugh, for we would never want to laugh at another's pain.
Proverbs 17:22 tells us: "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken
spirit dries up the bones." And I know that these words are true, for
whoever has benefitted from a broken spirit.  Even though we go through
these valleys of life, the object is not to spend time there, for our bones
get dried up, and we lose our ability to laugh.  When those who were exiled
to Babylon returned to Jerusalem, here is the song that was sung: " When the
Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Our mouths
were filled with laughter then, and our tongues with shouts of joy. Then
they said among the nations, 'The Lord has done great things for them. The
Lord has done great things for us; we were joyful." Psalm 126: 1-3   I find
it joyful when I see the Lord's hand on us. I see the evidence of His
presence among us, and my heart is filled with joy, and I want to laugh.
It's interesting that the very same thing, Laughter, can bring comfort to
the weary, but can also weary the comforted.  We know that Job's so called
friends laughed at his discomfort, and it wounded his spirit.   Yes, I love
to laugh, but it's another of those things that we need to watch, for with
laughter, it can allow an evil one to think you are with them.  It can
trouble the heart of one, who is mourning.  It can bring increased sorrow to
someone, who at the moment cannot share in your laughter.  But it can bring
joy to a heart needing to be lifted in laughter.  It can bring hope to the
hopeless when they see the joy that is in you, even in the time of trials.
It's amazing that one behavior, can have and bring on so many emotions.  And
I see hope in laughter also, for even in the Beatitudes, we are told: "You
who are now hungry are blessed, because you will be filled. You who now weep
are blessed, because you will laugh." Luke 6:21  So then, laughter is good
for the soul, but there is a time to laugh, and I hope that you will find
time to laugh. I hope you are filled with the joy of the Lord so much that
you must express yourself in laughter.  I pray that our laughter is from the
heart, and from the Spirit, for the Spirit will show us when the time to
laugh is, and when the time to mourn is.  But I believe it is God's intent
to give us laughter as medicine for the spirit of man. I believe it, like
anything else, can be used for good and for evil.  But I know that the time
of gathering of friends, even in the midst of suffering can bring a weary
heart to the point of joy, and culminate in laughter.  So brother and
sister, don't be afraid to laugh, but laugh because of the joy that is in
you, not at the expense of another's suffering, but in the ability to share
with them in their grief, so that they can share with you in your joy.  The
Lord has done a great thing in giving us this powerful weapon against the
adversary, to laugh- Psalm 37:12-13

Pastor Andy

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the joy that You place in our hearts. Thank
You for the love that overwhelms us to the point of laughter because of the
joy we feel in You.  But Lord, I pray for those who find it hard to laugh,
either from loss, or from a weary heart, or from the captivity of the mind
by the adversary. I pray for Your power to be made manifest in them, and
that they see You.  I pray then for: Kathryn, for the Dement family in their
loss, for Mary Ruiz, Betty H., Veronica, Douglas, Fritz, Kaitlyn's
