There was a man in the first century church, who must have professed Christ, but something happened. His profession was not a true profession, but rather one in which he made to gain position within the body of believers. His name was Diotrephes. But what was his sin? He wanted so much to be the center of attention within the body, and he must have had some influence within the body, because of what he did. Let me write what the Scripture says: "I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive us. This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome the brothers himself, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church." 3 John 9-10 John wrote quite a bit in his three letters here about false teachers and prophets, who claim to have a belief, but are wolves in sheep's clothing. They are the ones in the church that feel others within the church are not good enough to be there, and they desire to purge the church of their presence. Now we do have to pay attention to the purity of Scripture, but today, we have the tendency to reside in the twigs of legalism, and forget the message of love: "The one who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and doesn't know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes." 1 John 2:10-11 Let's make sure our eyes are not blinded to our true brothers, just because they are not like us. After all the one in error might be us. The test is to love like Christ, and that can only be done with a heart surrendered to Christ.
Lord, please make our hearts more like Yours. Take away the sin that grows like a fungus around our hearts toward others within the body that love You. May our walk be one of purity, and humility before You, so that we can see the true believer from the false teacher. Create in us a clean heart, with compassion toward those who faith is weak, but who desire to grow in You. May we be an example to them and to the world that we do not walk as the world walks, but as You walk. So help us to see Your Spirit present and overflowing, by being like-minded and consumed by Your love for each other. I pray this in Your blessed Holy name, the name of Jesus.
