It was late evening, and the disciples were in a boat in the middle of a lake, being battered by the waves and the wind. In the early hours of the morning, Jesus comes walking to them on the water, as if it is the most natural thing to do, but the disciples, seeing Him, were terrified. They thought it was a ghost. Jesus spoke to them to calm their fears, but Peter put out a test to see if it really was Jesus. He said: "Lord, if it's You, Peter answered Him, 'command me to come to You on the water.' 'Come!' He said. And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid. And beginning to sink he cried out, 'Lord, save me!' Immediately Jesus reached out His hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, 'You of little faith, why did you doubt?' Matthew 14:28-31 We often think of the fact that Peter started to sink after he was walking on the water, yet Peter is the only one who got out of the boat. He may have had little faith, but his faith was great compared to the inactivity of the remaining disciples. So is our faith so small that we cannot walk on the water? It's possible, and more than likely, but I wonder how many of us would have even gotten out of the boat. If we have faith, we are told we can move mountains. Yet, all faith starts with the small step of getting out of the boat of doubt; of getting out of the boat of complacency; of getting out of the boat of worry. We know the Lord still heals, still saves, still gives us strength, but where is the testing that builds us up in the faith, that starts with a small step into the plane of the unknown? Jesus has so much more for us, if we would only take a chance and step out of the boat. Why not try it, you might find your faith is stronger than you think. But we will never know unless we try.
Lord, Save us! From the comfort that keeps us unwilling to get out of the boat of our own security. Help us be bold, especially when facing the opposition that tries to silence our voice. I pray for hearts that desire to shout You from the roof tops, and to proclaim Your praises to the sky. I pray for strength to stand when all around us wants us to sit. I pray for strength to stand, when others around us want us to bow down to false gods. May we stand in You. Today Lord, I pray for Pam, who had a successful surgery yesterday. Please heal her quickly and get her back on the road to recovery. I pray for Carolyn, who needs You to Save her from the fears that engulf her. I pray for: The Rodriguez family, for their loss; for Loren, who has uncontrollable asthma. I pray for Gavin, our military who continue to suffer loss of life protecting others; for Sandy, and Kim and Allen, Bill; I pray for Mike S., Loren, Barbara, Jackie Ann, Cynthia, Rheba, Harriet, Ada, Peggy.
