My wife made a startling observation the other day while we waited for the oil to be changed in our car. Inside the office were four adults and two children about pre-teen, or early teens. They were eating a fast food meal, and all the adults including yours truly, were on our cell phones. She thought that was funny, and when we all looked at ourselves, it was. I think at times we are obsessed with our phones. There was a research firm that recruited 94 Android device users and installed special software on their smartphones. The tool tracked each user's "interaction" over five days, all day. "And by every interaction, we mean every tap, type, swipe and click. We're calling them touches," the researchers explained. The heaviest smartphone users click, tap, or swipe on their phone 5,427 times a day, according to researchers. That's the top 10 percent of phone users, so one would expect it to be excessive. However, the rest of us still touch the addictive things 2,617 times a day on average. Averaging out the numbers, those figures mean the heaviest users are touching their devices a couple of million times in one year. And we don't think we have an addiction? Phones can be a life-safer, and they can also be a life taker, as shown by texting and driving. The use needs to be in perspective to what is more important. Scripture tells us: "Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For everything that belongs to the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of one's lifestyle - is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God's will remains forever." 1 John 2:15-17 Wouldn't it be wonderful if we touched our Lord by prayer every time we thought of touching our cell phones?
Lord, Help us to see the things that we become addicted to. Help us to return to the first love of knowing You and this wonderful Salvation that You have given us. Lord would you bless Jack today with a good report as he has an angiogram done? Would you heal where healing is needed. Please be with Rheba, Harriet, the Rodriguez family, Daniel, Linda, Carolyn, Mike S., our Military, Mike P, and the churches represented by those who read this prayer. Please help us to balance those things given to us for our benefit, and not make an obsession out of them. I pray this in Jesus name.
