When Jesus told the crowd in Matthew 12:46-50, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?" And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, 'Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven, that person is My brother and sister and mother." He was not putting down His love for His biological family but raising the importance of friends. This comes about through His love, the love He has shown us over and over again, that this kind of love (Agape) can be ours, for He was introducing a totally new concept of what love is all about. He would tell those around Him, as recorded in John 15: "This is My command: Love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you." 15:12-14 Does this kind of love only happen when one is in distress? I would say that this love goes beyond feeling and touches the heart. It brings the love of friends into the realm of Christ, and helps us realize the depth of His love for us. It is a constant reminder that we are never alone, for this love is not connected to time and space, but exists fully within the heart of an individual. It is there that we choose to love like Christ. Think about this: Did we ever become so good as to warrant the love of Christ? Did we first do great things to be rewarded with His approval? Are we so attractive as to be enamored by Christ? No, for even in our dirtiest darkest times, He loved us, because He chose love. He wants us to chose love, just like we chose to receive His love for us; just like we chose to accept Him as Lord of our lives. He drew us to Himself out of His great love for us. No one has more appeal, and no one has less appeal to Him, including biology, for He looks and deals with the heart of man, even in its wickedness. Can we actually love like that? Read again the verse I wrote last. This is My command! To love like He loves. If and when we learn to love like that, we will have unraveled the mystery of the love of God, and we will see each other differently, and become true friends.
Lord, please instill in us this great love. I know this love, and am overwhelmed by it. I pours over like a raging ocean, pulling us closer to Your arms; pulling us ever nearer to Your own heart. Please put Your kind of heart within all of us, so that we can see each other with eyes of faith, and know that we can love like that, and that we are loved like that. Thank You Lord for this great love, that comes in the very name of Jesus, in whom I pray.
